Symptom

If you see the following error message in the System Event Log, your disk may have encountered I/O timeout issues.

[Host]: Disk {x}: NCQ disabled. Timeout error.

NCQ stands for "Native Command Queuing", which is a technology that improves disk performance and stability. It is an extension of the SATA protocol. NCQ can optimize the order of multiple I/O commands to reduce I/O latency. When the system detects I/O timeout issues on a disk, it may disable NCQ for the purposes of error handling. If error handling actions fail, your NAS will not be able to detect this disk.

Solution

Try moving this disk to another drive bay and check whether this error message still appears in the System Event Log. If this issue still persists, we recommend replacing this disk as soon as possible. Sometimes disabling NCQ in your disk settings can prevent this issue. To disable NCQ, go to Storage & Snapshots > Disk & JVBOD > Disk Health > Advanced. This setting is only available for SATA disks.

Note:

Disabling NCQ does not prevent other issues where the NAS cannot detect a disk.
