QNAP Turbo NAS supports comprehensive RAID types, providing IT administrators with great flexibility in arranging suitable data protection levels. Besides being a secure place for data storage, the Turbo NAS also facilitates storage management and capacity allocation. The QTS Storage Manager makes it simple for IT administrators to create a unified Storage Pool to efficiently manage and deploy storage capacity.

 
 

Flexible volume management

Select a volume type that suits your needs

You can choose either a "Static Volume" (allocates all usable space on one volume, provides the best random access performance), a "Thick Volume" (pre-allocates dedicated space for general storage and virtualization usage), or a "Thin Volume" (provides the benefits of Thick Volumes while allowing dynamic storage capacity allocation).

Please note that Thick and Thin Volumes can only be used on NAS models that support Storage Pools. Thin Volume performance may degrade after long-term usage.

Intelligent Storage Manager

The QTS 4.0 Storage Manager neatly presents tools and options for managing system storage with an intuitive graphical interface. From reviewing the system storage allocation in the Dashboard, to managing volumes, Storage Pools, disks and iSCSI storage, the Storage Manager provides a centralized place to ease the work of storage management.

Volumes
Create, remove, expand volumes, and do advanced actions such as manage cache and rename volume aliases.
Storage Pools
Create, remove, and expand Storage Pools.
Disks

Identify the hard disk type by its color and the location of each disk on the Chassis View.

Disk information

Click to check disk information and disk health, scan the disk, locate the disk, or check the disks within the RAID Group.

Introducing Storage Pool

IT administrators can aggregate multiple RAID groups as a big storage pool to flexibly utilize the storage capacity as a whole, protected with data redundancy and allowing better data protection against multiple disks failure concurrently for large capacity environment. Now, multiple volumes can be created on the Storage Pool to provide flexible deployment.

Flexible volume allocation

QTS 4.0 allows creating multiple volumes on the Storage Pool for various applications in typical business environments with different workgroups.


Block-level iSCSI LUN
Besides storing data, the volumes can be utilized as an iSCSI LUN. The block-level iSCSI LUN provides less overhead which improves the overall read/write performance. It also supports thin-provisioning, and features Space Reclaim and online capacity expansion.

Online capacity expansion
Add more hard drives to increase the storage capacity of the Storage Pool on demand. The volumes and LUN can be expanded online instantly, up to 250TB*, without interrupting the services.

Thin-provisioned volume
Over-allocate the volume capacity for each workgroup regardless of the physical storage limit. The physical disk space is used only when files are written. Thin-provisioning can ensure the disk space is fully utilized.

Space Reclaim
Normally when data is deleted in a space, the storage capacity cannot be transferred back to the overall Storage Pool. But with Space Reclaim, space can be reclaimed and released back to the overall Storage Pool to be re-used by other volumes. This provides much more efficient storage utilization.

* 250TB volume is supported only for Turbo NAS with 4G RAM (or above).

 

RAID configuration

RAID management made flexible

The Turbo NAS supports comprehensive RAID types thus provides IT administrators great flexibility to arrange a proper data protection level. Based on the number of hard drives of different Turbo NAS, IT administrators can choose from RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 5+hot spare, 6+hot spare, and 10+hot spare configurations. Considering the performance gain and extra redundancy, IT administrators can choose the most appropriate RAID configuration to effectively reduce the risk of data loss caused by unexpected hard disk failure.

The Global Hot Spare feature allows IT administrator to share spare drives with multiple RAID volumes on the Turbo NAS. When a hard drive fails in any RAID volume, the global hot-spare drive will automatically replace the failed drive to prevent data from being lost. Compared with a local spare drive, the Global Hot Spare function offers more efficient use of spare drives.

Back up to remote server via RTRR or rsync

Data in the Turbo NAS can be backed up to another remote Turbo NAS or FTP server on a real-time basis via QNAP’s RTRR (Real-Time Remote Replication) service, or a standard rsync server on scheduling basis via rsync protocol.

With RTRR, the source Turbo NAS will monitor the files and synchronize the changes to the destination server. IT administrators can do backup tasks by instant backup and scheduled backup, with compression and SSH encryption options supported.

RAID volume expansion

Uninterrupted system uptime

The Turbo NAS makes RAID volume expansion convenient and easy. At initial setup of the Turbo NAS, IT administrators can create RAID volumes by using small-sized hard drives. As business grows, the Turbo NAS storage capacity can be expanded by replacing existing hard drives with larger ones without the system being interrupted. All it takes is to replace the hard drives one by one and rebuild the RAID for each hard drive replacement, ensuring ongoing business operations.

RAID level migration

Upgrade when data gets more important

The importance of stored data could change over time. At first, IT administrators can start using the Turbo NAS from single disk mode. When the stored data is getting more and more important, IT administrators can migrate the system from single drive mode to RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, or even RAID 10 by adding additional hard drives. All the actions can be done online without turning off the Turbo NAS and with all the data retained.

Advanced RAID applications

Enhanced read-only protection

A degraded RAID volume with bad blocks will normally cause a read/write error and the RAID volume might crash when it reaches the number of allowed failed hard disks. The Turbo NAS allows the volume with one or more hard disk failure to enter the read-only protection mode in case the bad block error happens on the second failed disk of RAID 5 or third failed disk of RAID 6, allowing the IT administrators to rescue critical data.

RAID recovery

With QNAP NAS exclusive RAID recovery technology, the RAID can be recovered to previous condition when more than the allowed disks are removed from a RAID volume. On the other hand, the RAID recovery technology is also helpful if the valid disk is removed by mistaken instead of the failed one, especially for businesses with high-end Turbo NAS with many hard drives. The system will recover to the degraded mode by just one-click after all the hard drives are inserted back to the system.

Proactive data protection

RAID hot-spare and Global hot-spare drives

Besides the Turbo NAS, the expansion enclosures REXP-1200U-RP and REXP-1600U-RP support RAID hot-spare and Global hot-spare. If a hard drive in a specific RAID group fails, the RAID group will be automatically rebuilt with the hot-spare and the remaining healthy drives to ensure continuous system operation. More than that, the global hot-spare drives can be shared efficiently among multiple RAID Groups.

QNAP SMART data migration

With the SMART data migration function enabled, QTS 4.0 constantly monitors the disks on the Turbo NAS. If a possible drive failure or abnormal health status is detected, the data will be proactively migrated to a new spare drive, reducing potential data loss and skipping the process of RAID rebuilding.

Advanced RAID read error recovery technology

When read errors occur due to bad blocks on a hard drive, the correct data on the bad blocks are automatically recovered with other healthy hard drives. Users are guaranteed to always obtain correct data. The process is run in the background, providing users a hassle-free experience.

TLER and ERC support

TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery) and ERC (Error Recovery Control) are now supported with compatible hard drives, improving drive error handling in RAID applications. This further prevents the hard drives from prematurely failing, forcing rebuilds, and RAID volume loss. The data will be retrieved more quickly when a hard drive takes too long to respond from bad blocks.

 

Scale-up solution

Expand storage capacity on demand

QNAP expansion enclosures can be used to expand the raw storage capacity of a QNAP NAS as required to meet future storage needs. One or more expansion enclosures can be connected over time, allowing businesses to plan their IT budgets for projected data growth in the near future.

Easy plug-and-use

Simply plug a RAID expansion enclosure to the Turbo NAS, power it on, and use the QTS 4.0 Storage Manager to expand the NAS storage capacity online. All of this is done without service interruption and business continuity is ensured. The status and health of the enclosures can be monitored via the web-based management interface of QTS 4.0 Storage Manager.

QTS 4.0 Storage Manager features an intuitive GUI, and allows users to check disk information on the host NAS or expansion enclosures easily.

Missing mode protection

When the disconnection of a RAID expansion enclosure is detected, the Turbo NAS blocks IO access to protect data. The system can recover from the missing mode to the normal state with data staying intact.

Locate hardware easily

With just a single click, IT administrators can locate the NAS, RAID expansion enclosures, hard drives, and RAID groups in the server room easily.
