Thai Roong Ruang Group affirms QNAP Turbo NAS TS-879U-RP supported its expansion

"The QNAP Turbo NAS has a variety of productive features that have reduced our system maintenance time by 50% and increased our work efficiency by 90%." - Thai Roong Ruang Group

Company background:

Thai Roong Ruang Group is regarded as a typical sugar factory in Thailand. The group started its sugar business after the end of the Second World War. Due to the sugar shortage crisis in wartime, the founder of Thai Roong Ruang Group, Mr. Suree Asadathorn, was engaged in inventing a new technique to manufacture sugar. He made it possible and founded the company in 1946. Today, Thai Roong Ruang Group keeps this spirit of innovation, continually devoting itself to research, modification and improvement. At present, Thai Roong Ruang Group is recognised as a leading sugar manufacturer and exporter in Thailand.

Challenges:

As Thai Roong Ruang Group has been in the sugar industry for over 60 years, it is a large scale business and has expanded to seven subsidiary companies across relevant industries such as sugar refining, molasses processing, ethanol energy and manufacturing. To facilitate the coordination among each subsidiary and the management of information, Thai Roong Ruang Group deployed several file servers to cope with its increasing data volume. However, the file servers adopted were too unstable to support efficient data management within such a large business group. Furthermore, Thai Roong Ruang Group suffered from the inflexibility to expand with additional hard disks for future demand. The limitation on expandability of its old servers was a big issue as IT administrators planned to upgrade the hard drives to larger ones. The file servers adopted were without online RAID capacity expansion.

Remote access ability was another required feature. The organisational structure of Thai Roong Ruang Group was so complicated with a vast expanse of plants that it was critical that each subsidiary was able to access, share, and manage their data remotely. The existing servers not only failed to provide a remote access function for Thai Roong Ruang Group, but also increased the cost of maintenance and communication. As a result, the organisation started to look for a new NAS solution that would better serve its needs.

Solution:

Through referral, Thai Roong Ruang Group chose the QNAP Turbo NAS TS-879U-RP as its new NAS solution. The TS-879U-RP is powered by a high performance 3.3 GHz Intel® Core™ i3 processor and 2GB DDR3 memory, which can be easily utilised in different business applications. The 10 GbE design featuring an outstanding data transfer rate of over 1,000 MB/s data throughput fully met the performance demand of Thai Roong Ruang Group. The multiple LAN port design provides a network failover function to ensure the NAS server is available 24/7, even in the event of any network port failure.

The TS-879U-RP supports WebDAV, allowing the staff of Thai Roong Ruang Group to remotely access the server and manage files with drag-and-drop gestures on Windows and Mac computers. In addition, the web-based interface of Turbo NAS file management allows users to download, upload and manage the files anywhere with a web browser, without additional software installation. This makes file management much easier.

The TS-879U-RP also features eight hot-swappable hard drive trays so that IT administrators in Thai Roong Ruang Group can arrange the volume capacity more flexibly.

Benefits:

With large storage capacity and reliable data transfer ability, Thai Roong Ruang Group shares files across each subsidiary company more easily, and its 24/7 operation is now fully backed by the TS-879U-RP. In brief, the TS-879U-RP enables Thai Roong Ruang Group to reduce its system maintenance cost by 50% and to improve the efficiency of file management by 90%. An extra benefit of the web-based file manager comes with the TS-879U-RP: it eliminates the expenditure of training because QNAP Turbo NAS makes file management so easy.

Confident of the quality of QNAP products, Thai Roong Ruang Group has scheduled to deploy several of QNAP's VioStor Network Video Recorders (NVR) to monitor its large-scale factories in the future. The network-based NVR system will enable Thai Roong Ruang Group to integrate with its NAS system and enrich its QNAP experience.
