Dr. Yen-Jen Chen Utilises QNAP Turbo NAS for Important Academic Data Storage and Backup
“I highly recommend QNAP Turbo NAS to anyone looking for a NAS with great stability and easy-to-use functions.” - Dr. Yen-Jen Chen
Dr. Yen-Jen Chen has a PhD degree in computer science, and is a professor of the same field. Dr. Chen has managed the computer centre of the university he works for and understands the importance of data backup and security. He now advocates the QNAP Turbo NAS to others after a great experience using the QNAP TS-409.
After years of research work, Dr. Chen has accumulated a significant amount of important files that need to be securely archived. Previously he manually backed up his PC data to an external hard drive and with this method, 60GB of data could take up to 5 or 6 hours to back up. Sometimes the backup process even encountered failure after hours of waiting, which would be very frustrating.
Dr. Chen chose the QNAP Turbo NAS TS-409 as his primary storage system 3 years ago. He used an external hard drive attached to the QNAP Turbo NAS TS-409 as backup storage and was impressed with the transmission speed and stability of the system. In addition, during the backup process, he could simultaneously save data on the TS-409, without affecting the system performance.
In 2011, he also purchased two units of the Turbo NAS TS-659 Pro,+ for Real-time Remote Replication (RTRR). He used one of the TS-659 Pro+ units as the primary storage unit and used the other as a backup system located in another building, scheduling incremental backup to take place every day. He then didn’t need to worry about forgetting to manually back up the data.
This positive experience of using QNAP Turbo NAS products has encouraged Dr. Chen to also adopt 2 Turbo NAS TS-809U-RP units for academic purposes; each with 8 HDDs installed, providing even better performance.
Through the reliability and high performance of QNAP Turbo NAS, Dr. Chen’s research group no longer had to worry about data backup. The TS-809U-RP is also equipped with an Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 2.8 GHz CPU, which provides a high data transmission speed. “Backup time is reduced by at least 50%,” Dr. Chen said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chen pointed out that the RAID 5 data protection technology not only enhanced data security but also provided a storage expansion feature. For example TS-809U-RP users can replace 2TB HDDs with 3TB HDDs to utilise a maximum of 21TB (3TBx7) storage space.
Furthermore, the TS-809U-RP is equipped with 2 Gigabit LAN ports, providing iSCSI and bandwidth aggregation features. Dr. Chen plans to apply the functions to enable a more economical and advanced cloud service.
“I cannot emphasize enough the importance of properly storing data and I highly recommend QNAP Turbo NAS to anyone looking for a NAS solution with great stability and easy-to-use functions,” said Dr. Chen. He believes that the TS-809U-RP and TS-659 Pro+ are particularly ideal for schools and SMBs.
