Before you start
If you are using the older firmware versions (v2.1.0 build0904 or earlier) with 1.5TB drive(s) in your NAS, DO NOT upgrade the firmware through the Web Admin directly. Please go to QNAP.com, download the latest QNAP Finder (v3.3.2 build1017 or later) and update the firmware via it.
Announcement Recently we have received many feedbacks from our customers who were experiencing some troubles while running Seagate (ST31500341AS with SD15, 17 or 18) 1.5TB hard drive(s) on the QNAP NAS, such as randomly pause or hang for around 30 seconds at a time during certain write operations. And this randomly freezing will also lead to losing the existing RAID configuration.
Here is the statement from Seagate on TechReport.com which were posted on Nov. 10, 2008 (http://techreport.com/discussions.x/15863). Seagate has stated that they have noticed this and are working on an upgradeable firmware to resolve it.
In order to solve this problem for all the QNAP users before we can actually have the solution from Seagate, QNAP now provides our customers a special edition firmware, which is based on the latest official release (v2.1.2 build 1031) with Seagate ST31500341AS (SD15, 17 and 18) 1.5TB hard drive write-cache disabled. This should be able to fix the problem, but you might also experience some performance drop at the same time.
Note: TS-109 series only support up to 2TB per logical volume.
